Page 10: Hoover Dam (04/19/2003)

We left the Wupatki National Monument at about 3 PM local time to head back to Las Vegas. We took US-89 back South to I-40 that we took west through the towns of Williams and Ash Fork to western Arizona until the town of Kingman where we exited to take US-93 northwest to Hoover Dam and Las Vegas. US-93 was mostly four lanes until close to the dam where it narrowed to two lanes through the local mountains. This road is banned to commercial traffic and trucks, and our car was stopped for a brief search, before Hoover Dam. They are currently building an alternate highway to bypass Hoover Dam and allow Commercial Traffic to return bound for Las Vegas. A brief stop was made for pictures, but at 8 PM, nightfall the photos are dark. In hindsight I wish we had walked around, because access later might be limited due to terrorist fears. From Hoover Dam, we continued to Las Vegas where we originally began our Road Trip Journey. I am sure the rental car company was not impressed with the condition of the new rental car. Originally the car had 37 miles. After traveling 1,400 miles through Nevada, Utah, and Arizona through rain, sleet, snow and mud, this car looked anything but new.

After we arrived back in Las Vegas, we returned to the Top of the World Restaurant in the Stratosphere Tower for night Las Vegas views and excellent food for our final meal. Next, Bill and I tried our luck at the slot machines. We both came out ahead. Bill broke out ahead by about $300 dollars; I ended about $40 dollars ahead. At about 1:30 AM local time (5:30 AM Eastern Time) we returned to the room for the night. The next morning, Sunday (04/20/03), we returned the rental car and headed back to the Las Vegas airport. We caught Delta flight 698 which left Las Vegas at 11:00 AM Pacific Time, and arrived at Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta at 5:45 PM Eastern. This 4 day / 3 night adventure generated many memories. The Las Vegas Strip is several miles long, so they are currently building a train system to link all the casinos. I will definitely return to Las Vegas to spend more time in town when that system is complete to visit all the themed resorts. Hope you had as much fun on this picture tour as I did making it.
