Page 6: To Grand Canyon (04/19/2003)

About 9 PM (MDT) we left Bryce Canyon heading west on highway 12, then South along US-89. We had a choice to make, whether to drive back to Las Vegas and get up at 2 or 3 AM to drive to the Grand Canyon or just drive directly there from here. We decided to drive directly to the Grand Canyon. We continue along US-89 south till the town of Kanab where the highway turns to the east for about 70 miles. Near the town of Page US-89 turned south and we finally entered the state of Arizona. We continued south on US-89 until the town of Cameron where we looked for an open motel at 3 AM (MST). Unlucky with the motel, we turned west on Highway 64 to find a place to sleep in the car. We pulled off into one of the scenic pullouts and parked the car for a LONG night sleep. I may have slept 90 minutes total. In the morning we woke up to temperatures in the 30’s, but that was only a hint of what was to come. Because most of this leg was at night, there are no pictures through most of this trip. Pictures listed below were taken Saturday morning along highway 64 while driving through the Hopi & Navajo Indian Reservations on the last few miles into the Grand Canyon National Park. This area is marked on the map as the Painted Desert.
