Our first destination was Zion National Park off Highway 9 in SW Utah. Zion is
located along the edge of the Colorado Plateau, where uplifting has revealed
different layers of the earth surface. Called the Grand Staircase, this area runs
from the Grand Canyon in Arizona to Bryce Canyon in Utah and allows a look through
the region’s history. The Virgin River flowing through the Zion Region has carved
out this canyon over millions of years. We visited the park during a cloudy misty
day with temps in the 50s-60s and although wet, we were comfortable. Zion National
Park has a large parking lot and a bus system, which takes you through all the parks
attractions. While riding on the bus, we encountered a father and daughter walking
team who had to turn back from their hiking trip, due to snow on the 6-mile trail
they were hiking up to above. The cliffs are about 2,500 feet high above the Virgin
River. Just that distance made the difference between cold rain and accumulating
snow. All the pictures taken were from along the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive free bus
route, or while walking along the mile long Riverside Walk Trail to the Narrows
Region of the Virgin River. The elevation at the Temple of Sinawava (the Riverside
Walk trailhead) was 4,418 feet, while the surrounding Observation Point above was
6,507 feet above sea level. Enjoy the Pictures below.
Pictured below left is me feeding a granola bar to a small animal that ate it directly out of my hand. (Yes, later I read not to do that!)
Pictured below at the right is deer in the region.
