AM Broadcast Band reception is different than FM reception. The distance that AM stations
can go is limited by wattage and other stations on the same frequency, which also "mix"
with what you are trying to listen to, unlike FM stations which "overtake" one another.
In the evening, it is very hard to get reception of stations between (1300khz and 1500khz)
because of band overcrowding which results in listening clutter.. The radios which I use
for AM reception appear in the title bar above. A good AM/FM/LW/SW radio to get you started
is the
Sangean ATS-909
(Also sold by Radio Shack Model DX-398 part #20-228). I
use that for all my portable listening uses. At home I use a
Kenwood TS-2000
HF/VHF/UHF All Mode Multiband Amateur Transceiver being driven by a
Cushcraft R8 multiband HF antenna.
Best AM reception occurs during the night hours and in the winter. Notice stations
in Detroit, Chicago, and New York that can be received at night. If you can get over
the interference; lots of news, sports, music and religious variety awaits you from
all over the nation. If interested in DX’ing the AM band, you can get more information from
www.fcc.gov or you may want to purchase a book containing
complete info about broadcasting stations, such as the
M Street Radio Directory
, (edited Robert Unmacht from M Street Corporation,

This area in BLUE displays a list of "Clear Channel" Stations, which the FCC throughout the years
has protected against other night operation stations. This protection along with upto
50,000 watt nightly transmission powers, allows reception distances sometimes more than 750 miles.
Best reception results occur during night hours especcially during the winter and during high solar activity periods. In earlier years,
before radio consolidation, listeners could hear a wide variety of formats including
music, talk, and comedy. But after radio consolidation many stations run Talk, Sports,
or Programming in Spainish.

This area in GREEN displays a list of AM Stations personally received by me in Georgia.
Many of these stations originate in Metro Atlanta, but a great deal of these are
also "Clear Channel" stations from New York, Chicago, Tulsa, Nashville, and Boston.
If conditions are right, sometimes stations which are not "clear channel stations" may also
acheive good distances such as WPAD Paducah, KY; WAVG Louisville, KY; and WODT New Orleans, LA.
Just turn on your radio and who knows what you will hear and from where!!

AM radio is a very exiting band to listen to if one can
stand the static and interference. During the daytime local niche stations can be heard
tailoring their broadcasting format for a very small time audiences, such as an "all Elvis"
format. But at night, on the other hand, variety from as far as 2,000 miles is possible,
especially of clear channel stations. Most clear channel stations transmit with 50,000 watts,
and can service 750 miles or more. For this reason, all clear channel
stations are listed below in BLUE to get you started. Following the AM Clear Channel list,
is a list of all radio stations received by me personally in North Georgia
(clear channel or local) are printed in GREEN.
