Day 4 (10/23/2004) Stop 14
La Brea Tar Pits
What is a tar pit? This landmark just shows how active the geological forces are in the
California region. Before this visit, actually I had never ever heard of a tar pit, and
when we discussed going to it, I was under the impression this was a manufacturing
facility for making asphalt. So this was a true geological surprise. Tar is just bubbling
up from below!! Can this be converted to gasoline?
